Is "Joe Citizen" Just Collateral Damage?

Is "Joe Citizen" Just Collateral Damage?

With the current tragedies in Japan being covered nightly on the news most of us can't help wondering "what if".

On NBC news, Brian Williams reported that an increasing number of Japanese believe their government is being less than honest with them and the rest of the world about the seriousness of the nuclear dangers facing them.

It is understandable that widespread panic will never bode well in an already dangerous situation, but what information is a government obliged to supply its citizens? Does a government have a "moral" obligation to protect its citizens from a serious health risk? Or does what looks good for the government itself supersede its people?

Do you believe if a similar situation to Japans was to happen in the United States, that our government would be totally honest with us? I would like to think they would, but sadly think otherwise. Unfortunately "Joe Citizens" information depends on politicians who worry more about special interest groups and the next election.

So what is your verdict? In the face of a horrific disaster, will the average citizen possibly find themselves written off as collateral damage?
